ALEXANDRITE: June Birthstone
If you were born in the month of June, you actually have not one but three birthstones to choose from – the classic Pearl, the magical Moonstone, and the very extraordinary gemstone, Alexandrite. We’ve written a post on the beauty of pearls and moonstones previously, so in this post, we’re exploring Alexandrite in detail.
One of our favorite birthday gift ideas is giving someone jewelry that is associated with their birthstone. For each month in the year, there is a designated birthstone which dates back to ancient times. Each birthstone has a unique historical significance and meaning.
TURQUOISE: December Birthstone
Turquoise is one of the traditional birthstones for the month of December and is the gem of the 11th wedding anniversary. This December birthstone is one of the world’s most ancient gems. The gem’s name comes from the French expression pierre tourques, or “Turkish stone.” The name, which originated in the thirteenth century, reflects the fact that the material probably first arrived in Europe from Turkish sources.
TOPAZ: November Birthstone
Topaz is one of the birthstones for the month of November and is the gem of the 23rd anniversary. Most authorities agree that the name topaz comes from Topazios, the old Greek name for a small island in the Red Sea, now called Zabargad. Some scholars trace the origin back to Sanskrit (an ancient language of India) and the word topas or tapaz, meaning “fire.”
TOURMALINE: October Birthstone
Tourmaline is a birthstone for October, along with opal. Tourmaline is also the gem of the eighth anniversary. Like opal, tourmaline is one of the world’s most colorful gemstones, which might be why they’re both October’s birthstones. Because tourmaline’s color can look like other gemstones, it has been mistaken as such gems as rubies or emeralds and has been used in royal jewelry throughout history. Only much later was it discovered to be tourmaline.
