About Michael Aram

Born Michael Aram Wolohojian in Providence, Rhode Island in 1963, Aram grew up in a tightly-knit Armenian family in Scarsdale, New York. After graduating from High School where his creative and artistic leanings were already evident, he obtained a degree in Art History from Bates College. He studied fine-art in Florence, Italy at the Studio Art Center International and the University of Florence. Back in New York, he attended the New York Art Students League before taking a job designing books and posters in the editorial department of the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

But it was shortly thereafter, while travelling through India that Michael Aram became enamored of the exquisite handcrafted metalwork which was still being produced using time-honored methods such as sand casting and hand forging. Aram immediately began studying metal-craft techniques and started working with local craftsmen on pieces of his own design. Aram was hooked—the rest is design history.

Michael Aram is now an award-winning American artist who has dedicated his career to craft-based design. Inspired by his trip to India at age 25, he established a second home and studio there, where he continues to draw creative inspiration today.

Trained as a painter, sculptor, and art historian, Michael has neatly applied his diverse background to the decorative arts. Lyrical and often witty, his work encompasses a wide range of media and reveals a rich and variant source of inspiration – nature, mythology, narrative storytelling, and purified form. Michael’s work is also a celebration of craft and age-old hand working traditions. It is the enduring fusion of these ideals – originality, narrative, and craftsmanship – that has become the hallmark of this gifted artist.

Making

Fascinated with the richness of the living crafts tradition which he discovered on his first trip to Delhi, Michael would seek out craftsmen in the old city by listening for the sound of metal being beaten and by searching for the aroma of baked molasses, a signal of the sand casting process. The artisans he encountered were making ordinary objects such as buckets, shovels, and scissors, but for Michael, their traditional techniques were extraordinary. Michael spent hours observing artisans as they made things the same way families had made them for centuries. Touched by the talent and humility of these gifted artisans, Michael set up a studio in India where he has created his work for over 30 years. Today, over 200 artisans work alongside him in his workshop where the same creative interaction between artist and artisan remains the source of every object that Michael makes.

Motif

Michael is highly inspired by his surroundings and often makes sculptures of objects that might otherwise be overlooked in the everyday. Nature is his biggest muse, as is the handmade process. His work combines the imperfections innate in the handmade process with the perfectly imperfect beauty of nature to create objects that reflect humanity. Many of his pieces are ingrained with a rich storyline, inherent symbolism, and deep-rooted meaning. Sometimes his work is simply an exploration and celebration of the handmade process.

Michael Aram has received numerous recognitions and awards in his career, including: • Mertropolitan’s “Design 100” (1994) • Designer of the Year Award by Elle Décor India (2003) • The Overall Excellence in Design Award, New York International Gift Show (2003) • Retailer Excellence (2011) and Gift for Life Industry Achievement Award (2011) • Ellis Island Medal of Honor (2012) • The EDIDA (Elle Décor India Design Forum) Award (2013)

Michael Aram Collections

Michael Aram has around 30 unique collections. Five collections that we have found to be the most popular are White Orchid, Black Orchid, Butterfly Ginkgo, Twist & Palm.

The White Orchid Collection

The Michael Aram White Orchid Collection illuminates the ethereal spirit of the orchid flower. Evocative of purity, delicacy, femininity and grace, the white metal version offers a strikingly different appeal than its black counterpart. While the Michael aram white orchid picture frame on easel
sculpture is just as exuberant and detailed, in white, these flowers take on a
simplicity that is completely unique. There is a sense of lightness, freshness and even innocence - each petal seemingly untouched and pure.

The Black Orchid Collection

The Michael Aram Black Orchid Collection was inspired by the powerful sensuality of orchids and the rich ambiance of haute couture – strikingly simple yet full of the Michael aram black orchid candlemost extreme detail. The collection has an almost gothic feeling – opiated, lush, and smoldering – like the dark, velvety atmosphere of a luxurious evening.

The Butterfly Ginkgo Collection

The Butterfly Ginkgo Collection celebrates the representation of flora as fauna. Michael's fascination with a particular type of ginkgo tree, the ginkgo Biloba, or "Butterfly ginkgo", which grows with a double leaf reminiscent of a butterfly's wings, gave rise to a fantasia image of the plant. Executed at the highest level of

hand-craftsmanship, each piece is rendered in solid bronze with acid etched cocoon-shaped vessels. The pieces in the collection are a tour de force of Indian craft and capture the poetic spirit that is so deeply indicative of Michael's work.

The Twist Collection

The Twist collection is inspired by the idea that the whole can be far greater than the sum of it's parts. When elements are combined, they take on another feeling, a greatness. Together, they are strong, but also I would argue, more beautiful. When Michael aram twist candle holderslines are repeated, or wires woven, there is a loveliness to the pattern that fascinates and pleases. A symmetry is created that is calming and classical.

The Palm Collection

The Palm Collection is inspired by the beauty of a windswept palm tree and the perfectly imperfect shapes of woven palm leaves and fallen fronds. The warm Michael aram palm napkin holderantique gold finish and the intricate sculpted textures exude comfortable luxury and graciousness.
